The effects of smoking and alcohol on oral health

Interviewer: Good morning, Dr. Sethurajan. It is a pleasure to have you with us today. As a dental specialist, could you tell us about the effects of smoking and alcohol consumption on oral health?

Dr. Sethurajan: Good morning, it is a pleasure to be here. Yes, of course. Smoking and alcohol consumption are two habits that can have significant negative effects on oral health. The chemicals found in tobacco smoke and the acid in alcohol can both contribute to the development of various oral health problems, such as gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer.

Interviewer: Can you tell us a bit more about the specific ways in which smoking and alcohol consumption can impact oral health?

Dr. Sethurajan: Absolutely. When it comes to smoking, the chemicals found in tobacco smoke, such as nicotine and tar, can stain teeth and contribute to gum disease. The heat from the smoke can also dry out the mouth, making it easier for bacteria to grow and increasing the risk of tooth decay and other oral infections. Additionally, smokers are also at a higher risk of developing oral cancer.

When it comes to alcohol consumption, it can lead to dehydration, which can cause a dry mouth and increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Alcohol can also increase the risk of tooth erosion, which occurs when the acid in the drink wears away the enamel of the teeth. This can lead to sensitivity, pain, and an increased risk of tooth decay over time. Alcohol consumption can also lead to poor oral hygiene, which can increase the risk of oral infections and other dental problems.

Interviewer: What steps can individuals take to protect their oral health from the negative effects of smoking and alcohol consumption?

Dr. Sethurajan: The best way to protect oral health is to quit smoking or reduce alcohol consumption. In addition, practicing good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly can help to prevent or catch oral health problems early on. By taking these steps, individuals can help to protect their oral health and avoid the negative effects of smoking and alcohol consumption.

Interviewer: That is great advice, Dr. Sethurajan. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today about the effects of smoking and alcohol on oral health.

Dr. Sethurajan: It was my pleasure. Thank you for having me.
